Graham Warsop

The Jupiter Drawing Room

Johannesburg

Graham, an Englishman, attained a Master's degree in law from Cambridge and qualified as a barrister with the intention of following a legal career.

Instead he followed his heart and spent a year attempting to write a novel.

Finding himself low on funds in South Africa, he took a job as a junior copywriter in an advertising agency. (In the book Ogilvy on Advertising the depiction of Ogilvy's chateau at Touffou suggested advertising could be a more rewarding outlet for a writer).

Eighteen months later, aged thirty, Graham founded The Jupiter Drawing Room; a beyond-the-line agency named after a bordello in a Guy de Maupassant short story.

Today, The Jupiter Drawing Room & Partners has offices in Johannesburg and Cape Town and is currently ranked the No 1 creative agency group in South Arica (Creative Circle points Table 2009). It is also the only agency from Africa to have been ranked in the top five most awarded agencies in the world by US trade publication Advertising Age.

As writer and/or hands-on creative director Graham's awards include 23 Cannes Lions (9 Gold), One Show Pencils, Clios Statues, LIAA Statues, and recognition at D&AD. At the LIAA 20th Anniversary retrospective, he was recognized as the most awarded creative director in the history of the festival. (Which he suspects goes to prove that if you stick around long enough good things happen).

Graham has amassed a large collection of air miles serving on international awards juries. He has judged at Cannes and The One Show, chaired Clios (Print) and been President of both the advertising and design sections of The LIAA. He has judged D&AD three times and sat on legendary adman Neil French's 'Best of the Best' jury for the two years of the World Press Awards in Singapore. His international presentations have included a Gold on Gold talk at The One Club in New York and Clios workshops in Shanghai, San Francisco and Miami.

He's still working on finding: 1) the time to complete his novel, and 2) the money to buy a chateau like Touffou.
