Everything I know about radio I stole from Bullwinkle when I was seven. The writing, the casting, the timing. It was perfect. I didn't even know that's where I'd learned everything till I'd wasted five years at the University of Houston, worked as a writer at a couple of small shops in Houston, gotten on at GSD&M and then moved to Dallas to work at DDB under David Fowler (creator of the Motel 6 campaign) helping with Radio Monsters. Radio Monsters was an in-house "radio ranch" devoted entirely to writing and producing great radio. I came back to Austin and GSD&M as a CD and ran a radio group here for several years. I've won a ton of awards (Radio Mercury finalist) and argue frequently with Luke Sullivan who included some of my radio wisdom in an edition of Hey Whipple and sits across the hall. Great radio requires great writing and great production. Brilliant radio requires an unbelievably simple idea that no one has ever heard before. Whenever a writer brings me a script about a guy that answers letters/emails from people I tell him/her, "Sorry. Bullwinkle did that.
