Dropping out of a graphic design school in 1980 to take an opening as a humble paste up artist at DMB&B, James learned the tough lessons of life at the end of the advertising food chain. Three years of studio grafting led to loftier ambitions with Art Director roles at McCann Erickson, Y&R and local creative agency HKM where he enjoyed his first award success winning multiple gold at AXIS, New Zealand's premier creative festival.
In 1992 James moved to Australia to join Clemenger BBDO Adelaide picking up numerous awards at AWARD and Adelaide Art Director in the process. After just a year Saatchi & Saatchi coerced James back to New Zealand. Happy days again at AXIS, AWARD and Clio.
Three fruitful years later James took the opportunity to do the indie thing before it was fashionable by starting his own agency Generator, with three ex-Saatchi partners, as joint Creative Director. From scratch Generator went on to win a range of blue-chip clients such as BMW, Sony, Bridgestone/Firestone, Telstra, Singapore Airlines, DB Breweries, and won Agency of the Year in 1997.
When the partners sold Generator to the Bates network James shifted his role from Creative Director to Strategic Planner. An unusual but refreshing move that has helped prevent creative myopia.
At the beginning of 2005 James joined DraftFCB New Zealand, returning to his creative roots. He became Executive Creative Director in October 2005. Since that time the agency has doubled in size and staff numbers and enjoyed unprecedented success in new business wins, creativity and industry reputation. The agency has been awarded at Cannes, One Show, Clio, AWARD, AXIS, Caples and ECHO, CAANZ Media Awards, EFFIEs, as well as winning NZ Agency of the Year twice – in 2008 and 2010.
In the last 3 years James has judged at Cannes, New York Festivals, AXIS and a number of local award shows. He'd quite like to judge One Show one day.
