The Brief 2017

THERE'S A HOME FOR YOU IN DENVER

On Wednesday, November 8, at 6 o'clock p.m., Colorado's best and brightest design students converged at Amélie Company, for a high-stakes, speed-pitch competition, built to mimic the late-night frenzy felt at an agency right before deadline hits. The event, hosted by The ONE Club for Creativity - Denver; its beneficiary client, Volunteers of America Colorado.

Five fearless teams, comprised of five students each, plus one Creative Advisor selected from leading Front Range agencies (Cactus, Grenadier, Vladimir Jones, Legwork, Amélie Co.), received a never-before-seen client brief. Its contents detailed Volunteers of America Colorado's upcoming campaign, targeting local families who struggle financially, and may be on the verge of homelessness. Within a timeframe of 3 hours, Each team, crafted their own unique, creative client pitch. The tools and resources provided to each student team were lean, and ultimately, their success relied on the power of spontaneous, collaborative ideation.

In the end, themes and tactics presented ranged from digital marketing, to interactive, and merchandising collateral. "There's a Home for you in Denver", the winning pitch — created by Seth McClain and Alicia Baeza from University of Northern Colorado, Carmen Hernandez and Susanna LaBonde from Mapleton Expeditionary School of the Arts, and Hans Wendlandt from Metropolitan State University of Denver — encouraged local families in need to access VOA services by installing a moveable couch covered in homeless crisis statistics throughout Denver's most highly-trafficked areas. Slogans like, "this is NOT a bed," and "Why Pretend, when you can have a real home", displayed on city bus benches and mural art, alongside VOA contact information. Grenadier Copywriter, DJ Ursetta, guided his team toward the win.

Scholarship, development aid, and potential future client engagement, were all part of the winning team's prize package. All of the students who participated, received Meininger's gift cards. Special thanks to Pizzeria Locale and Colorado Beverage Association, official Food and Beverage Sponsors for The Brief 2017, and to our generous hosts at Amélie Company.
