The One Club announced today the winners for the 2013 Young Ones College Competition, the most prestigious student competition celebrating the year's best in advertising and design. There were 118 winners from 21 countries who emerged from a competitive pool of almost a thousand submissions.

Pencil winners were awarded cash prizes and will be included in the One Show Annual, a respected compendium of today’s most creative advertising. There were 8 Gold Pencil winners, 8 Silver Pencil winners, 8 Bronze Pencil winners and 94 Merit winners who were honored today at the Young Ones Student Awards Ceremony at 82 Mercer.

Additionally, the Patrick Kelly Scholarship, established in honor of the late creative known best for his work on the Federal Express campaign, was awarded to Camilo Galofre of the School of Visual Arts in New York. Lee Garfinkel, CCO and Chairman of Havas Worldwide, presented the $2,000 scholarship.

“Winning the Young Ones Competition gives students solid credibility in a hyper-competitive world,” said Emily Grotheer, Education Director of The One Club. “In today’s job market, graduating students must find news ways to distinguish themselves, especially in such sought-after fields like advertising and design. Young Ones provides recognition, exposure and access to industry leaders in a time when a degree alone is no longer enough.”

Gold Pencil winners include School of Visual Arts/Ranchos Palos Verdes, The Creative Circus/Atlanta, School of Visual Arts/New York, Pratt Institute/Brooklyn, Texas A&M University-Commerce/Carrollton and Otis College of Art & Design/Lennox. Their award-winning work includes “POP-fi,” “The Teachers Who Built Us,” “Missing School Cartons,” “Carlos,” “Bad Things vs. Education,” “Face-Value Microsite,” “Retractable Pencils of Promise” and “Corporate Identity Design.”

One of the longest-standing competitions of its kind, this year's challenge offered students a choice of two briefs aimed at creating solutions for social change. The first, Pencils of Promise, gave students the opportunity to shed light on the global education crisis affecting millions of students across the globe. The second, Justice by Design, provided students with the opportunity to tackle human rights issues by using design to communicate data for the sake of social justice.
