Mark Addison Smith's design specialization is typographic storytelling: allowing illustrative text to convey a visual narrative through printed matter, artist books, and site installations.
With his on-going, text-based archive, You Look Like The Right Type, Mark has been drawing snippets of overheard conversations every day since 2008 and exhibiting them as larger-scale conversations in venues including Foundry Art Centre, A+D Gallery, Brooklyn Artists Gym, and MAGMA Brand Design's Slanted Magazine. You Look Like The Right Type will celebrate its ten-year anniversary with a November 2018 solo exhibition at Atlanta's Eyedrum Gallery.
Permanent collections include: Center for Book Arts, Joan Flasch Artists' Book Collection, Kinsey Institute, Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art Thomas J. Watson Library, MoMA Franklin Furnace, Smithsonian American Art and National Portrait Gallery Artists' Book Collection, and Tate Library.
His most recent chapter publications are featured within Diversity and Design: Understanding Hidden Consequences (Routledge, 2015) and Queering Translation, Translating the Queer (Routledge, 2017).
Mark holds a Master of Fine Arts in Visual Communication from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) and teaches within the Electronic Design and Multimedia program at The City College of New York (CUNY) in New York City.
